Genuine lovers of bread pudding understand this basic dessert is transformed as it crosses international boundaries and chefs create their own special versions. Below are some of the best bread puddings discovered to date. Welcome are tips on other eateries that serve a good bread pudding.
El Sabor's restaurant served up an excellent bread pudding, a modernized dessert version of the classical capirotada ("bread pudding"). Capirotada has deep cultural and religious significance, and it can even be a main meal in Mexico when cheese, meat, and/or nuts and fruits are added. El Sabor's bread pudding is made with toasted bread, so it too has a crunchy top yet a soft, warm, and gooey middle. Topping it is homemade vanilla ice cream. Address: 4045 W. Fig Garden Drive, Fresno.
Mochuelo's at the Hotel Piccadilly (Spanish)
Mochuelo's Salted Caramel Bread Pudding is a rich and sweet bread pudding. Homemade caramel sauce laces this bread pudding made with chunks of brioche and topped with vanilla bean ice cream. Address: 2305 West Shaw Avenue (SW corner of West Avenue), Fresno.
The Limelight ('New' American)
The Limelight bread pudding is sweet and satisfying, and is the largest sized bread pudding so far that we have sampled. The pudding is made from sweet buns, and so it was among the sweetest, too. The pudding is topped with vanilla ice cream and served with a side of whipped cream, and everything is drizzled with an amaretto syrup. Address: 1054 West Shaw Avenue (across from Fig Garden Village), Fresno.
Papa's Place (New Orleans-style)
This bread pudding was soft, sweet, and drenched in cinnamon-flavored bourbon sauce. The generous portions of creamy vanilla ice cream and whipped cream cut well the sweetness of the pudding and its oodles of sauce. 453 Pollasky Avenue, Clovis.
Schoolhouse Restaurant (farm-to-table)
The Schoolhouse Restaurant Thanksgiving menu offered a tart and sweet Cranberry Bread Pudding. The Schoolhouse Restaurant features 'farm to table' finer dining. The cranberries and the cranberry sauce tasted fresh and tart. The bread pudding was warm and soft, and the vanilla bean ice cream sweet.
Phoenician Garden (Lebanese)
This bread pudding ("Ashtaliah") is a true international creation. The bread is toasted so it can soak up a sweet rose water syrup as well as the heavy cream topping. Then, the ashtaliah is covered with fresh crushed pistachios. Address: 1025 Herndon Avenue, Fresno.
Senior Aji (Peruvian)
Senior Aji’s tops its warm and sweet Bread Pudding with Pisco (Peruvian brandy) sauce and algarrobina (black carob). Address: 6701 N. Milburn Avenue, Fresno.
The American brew pub Mad Duck serves warm, sweet, traditional American-style Bread Pudding, topped with Caramel Sauce and Vanilla Ice Cream. Address: Campus Pointe, Fresno.
Kuni Sama, a teppan yaki and sushi bar, serves a "fusion" bread pudding: American-style but made with Hawaiian bread. This makes the pudding smoother and sweeter. Vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce comes on the side. Address: 6825 N. Willow Avenue, Fresno.
This thick bread pudding was sliced and drenched in a banana praline sauce. If you like bananas and you like it sweet, this is a good bread pudding for you. Address: 2003 W. Bullard Avenue (corner of West Avenue), Fresno.
Yosemite Falls Cafe
We made a discovery at Yosemite Falls Cafe. Their thick bread pudding with large raisins was also served with a sweet banana praline sauce, but the Cafe was out that day so the server offered to bring us the break pudding without the banana praline sauce. We discovered the bread pudding by itself was just fine. Address: 5321 N. Blackstone Avenue (between Shaw Avenue and Barstow Avenue), Fresno
