La Elegante Mexican Restaurant


La Elegante is an authentic Mexican restaurant located in Chinatown close to downtown Fresno. It is located at 1423 Kern Street. It is open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. every day except Monday. La Elegante is a small restaurant with an open kitchen. Don't let the exterior fool you. You will smell wonderful food as soon as you go through the door.






The menu is not the usual Americanized Mexican food. This is real Mexican food as you would find in a home kitchen. You can sit in booths or at the counter. Every booth was full, and there was a steady line of people ordering take-out.

We ordered the Asada (beef) Taco, Adabodo (pork) Combo, Veggie Combo, and Birria (Goat Stew).

Birria (Goat Stew)

Birria is a traditional Mexican stew served with corn tortillas and is not usually found in Americanized restaurants. The Birria was delicious. Be careful of bones. If you have never had goat, it tastes like lamb but slightly stronger. The broth was hearty and a little salty. The flavor was enhanced by small chunks of fat from the meat. Many people add additional flavors such as lime slices or hot sauce.

Four of us had lunch for $39.02 including tax and tip.
