La Reina de Michoacan Paletatia y Neveria

La Reina de Michoacan Paletaria y Neveria

La Reina de Michoacan Paleteria y Neveria is a Mexican frozen fruit bar and ice cream shop located at 720 East Belmont Avenue in central Fresno. The fruit bars and ice cream are all made on  the premises. The day we visited, there were more than 35 flavors of fruit bars (paletas) on the menu. The ice cream came in numerous tropical fruit flavors, and when we asked a question about one, they had us sample all of them.

Michoacan ice cream is found all over Mexico and now California. It started in the 1950s in the small town of Tocumbo, Mexico, and spread to Mexico City and then across Mexico. The shops are mostly family owned and produce a wide assortment of fruit flavored ice cream and frozen fruit bars. If you have never been to a Michoacan ice cream shop, you have been missing a wonderful part of Mexican cuisine.

Cones for Ice Cream
We had to choose, so we ordered a Strawberry and Cream Fruit bar and a dish of pine nut ice cream. We then finished with a frozen banana dipped in chocolate and covered in coconut. We left to stop ourselves from ordering more because everything was delicious. The strawberry and cream paleta tasted of fresh fruit and cream, and was more satisfying than many high end strawberry and cream ice creams. The pine nut ice cream had crunchy nuts. The banana was frozen but soft enough to eat, unlike the mass produced variety in stores that one has to gnaw.

Mangoniada

On a return visit we ordered a Mangoniada. Mango ice cream is topped with fresh mango and seasoned with chamoy and Tajin. The straw is wrapped in tamarind paste is rolled in chili powder.
Indoor Seating
There is a nice air conditioned seating area to eat your treats. Parking is right out front on the curb. They are open from noon until 8:00 on weekdays and noon until 9:00 on weekends. At one time they opened earlier at 11:00 a.m. but the posted hours on the door now say noon.
