The Oaxaca ("Wa-ha-ka") Restaurant serves Oaxacan Mexican food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. It is located in southeast Fresno at 4773 East Belmont Avenue. There are also two other locations in Selma and Madera. Oaxaca is open every day from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.
Oaxaca is a state in southern Mexico bordering the Pacific Ocean. Oaxacan food features seafood and the region's special mole, a sauce containing fruit, chili, nuts, and spices. The Oaxaca Restaurant has both the classic red mole ("mole rojo") and the black mole sauce ("mole negro"), which is a bit thicker and richer and includes Mexican chocolate and Mexican pepper leaf.
The menu features breakfast, children's food, appetizers, Oaxacan specialties, seafood platters, Mexican items including tacos and burritos, tortas (sandwiches), menudo, soups, salsa, dishes served in a molcajete (stone bowl), and much more.
We visited on a Sunday afternoon. The Oaxaca Restaurant was filled with families of all ages. Vendors went from table to table selling roses or chocolates, and musicians serenaded a family celebrating an event.
We decided to order two Oaxacan dishes: pork in black mole sauce, and molcajete mariscos (seafood in a stone bowl).
