Madera Flea Market

Madera Flea Market

The Madera Sunday Flea market has been transformed into a tianguis, the Aztec word for an open-air market. Madera has a large Mixtec population, many from Oaxaca, a state in southeastern Mexico. The Mixtec brought with them the tianguis, still popular in Mexico and Central America. Fantastic foods are everywhere. The flea market is open year round except for a week in September when the Madera County Fair takes place. The market also operates on Wednesdays.

You will find every fresh pepper your heart desires as you stroll along and tomatillos too....

More and more peppers (keep strolling ...).

Peppers with some tomatoes, too

Dried peppers

Sugared Fruit. Many fruits are dried and sugared through and through: bananas, pumpkin, pears, figs, dates, chilacoyote, sweet potatoes, tamarind, peaches, apricots, sugar cane (yes, sugared sugar cane - it is excellent if you like molasses flavors). The full list of fruits would be long.
Napol cactus pads ("napolas" or "napolitas"). Picked from young cacti, fresh they taste like lemony cucumbers. Their flavor becomes milder when steamed or sauteed. The napol cactus is also known as the Prickly Pear.

Champagne Mangoes (they were perfectly ripe)

Mexican / Mixtec Corn on the Cob. The fresh sweet corn is grilled and given to the customer on a plastic spike. At a side table (photo below), you can brush with mayonnaise, squirt with lime juice, sprinkle with finely grated cotija cheese and some chile powder - and more according to your liking. Though this may sound unusual to an American palette used to butter and salt, it is very good and worth a try.

One of many corn on the cob stands throughout the Flea Market / Tianguis

Local Honey Stand

Coconut Meat sprinkled with salt and lime placed in a plastic bag as a snack as you stroll. The coconut is cracked open in front of you and the coconut water is put in a bag with a straw.

Our sweet Pineapple and Horchata (tastes like rice pudding) drinks from drink stand (below), again one of many.

The Drink Stands sell a variety of sweet and cool drinks, including and especially horchata.

'Dirt Fresh' Papayas

Pork Sope at one of many fast food trucks and stands. A Sope is a small corn tortilla that is thicker and has a border around the edges.

Coctel de Camarones (Mexican Shrimp Cocktail)

Enter and enjoy. The entry fee is $1.25 per adult on Sunday, $1.00 on Wednesday. Children 12 and under are free when accompanied by an adult. The Madera Flea Market is open from 6:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
